Translating cutting edge research into measurable health gain for patients and populations
100,000 clinicians and academics work within the community, hospitals and universities located within our partnership. We enable collaboration across primary care, secondary care, community and social care, local government, patient groups, voluntary groups and industry. We help people to work together to translating cutting edge research and innovation into measureable health and wealth gain for patients and populations – in London, across the UK and globally.
We harness academia across biomedicine, the humanities and other disciplines, to solve the broader health problems of populations – for example, cultural barriers to cancer screening in certain ethnic communities. We facilitate dialogue between academics, clinicians and populations to ensure that research is focused on impact.
Our solutions are:
- Patient led
- Population focused
- Developed in partnership
- Delivered at pace
Patient led
Our work is grounded by understanding the needs of patient and understanding their experience or receiving healthcare. This focus on the patient is the binding force which enables partnership working. In all our activity we begin by actively seeking to understand the patient perspective and we measure patient experience to inform improvement.
Population focused
The needs of the local population of 6 million drive the focus of our integrated programmes of work. Where partners have global centres of academic excellence we reach beyond serving our local population to deliver health gains for patients and people across the UK and globally.
Developed in partnership
We take a partnership approach to developing solutions, working with patient groups, universities, NHS trusts, community care organisations, commissioners, government and industry. Our role is not to mandate change or to “own” solutions ourselves. Rather, we work with our partners to co-create, test and implement solutions, ultimately embedding these solutions in our partners’ everyday working.
Delivered at pace
It takes an average of 17 years to implement a proven healthcare innovation into standard medical care. We are speeding up the delivery of innovation into practice by enabling partnership across the translational pathway and using proven techniques which speed up adoption of innovation.
We use five levers
UCLPartners is the only Academic Health Science Partnership in the UK which aligns five approaches or ‘levers’ to translate innovation into practice. These levers connect discovery research, participation in large scale clinical trials, implementation of innovation, evaluation of innovation in practice and education. Combined, these levers enable us to translate cutting edge research and innovation into practice and then to measure the impact on health and wealth.
We lead programmes of work to deliver integrated, value-for-money, outcome-driven solutions to the most pressing healthcare challenges. These solutions include faster drug discovery and development; innovative technologies; new approaches to clinician education and professional development; and models of care that drive both quality and value.
