This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and experienced cancer clinician to take a leadership role for clinical trials in North Central London.

The North London Cancer Research Network (NLCRN) was established in 2002 as part of the NCRN initiative in England. The NLCRN continues to successfully support and develop research infrastructure to enhance the local portfolio of NIHR clinical trials and other well designed studies. Direct provision of infrastructure, assistance in access to funding from the Central and East London Comprehensive Local Research Network as well as undertaking key initiatives to improve R&D turn-around times has allowed the NLCRN to further improve access to clinical trials within North London. In 2010/11 research activity reached an all time-high with 18.5% of patients being recruited to a recognised research protocol, including10.3% to randomised controlled trials.

In April 2011, responding to London’s cancer challenge to improve survival and patients’ experience of care, the Model of Care for Cancer (NHS London, 2010) noted that cancer services can only be substantially improved if care is provided through co-ordinated networks taking collective responsibility for whole pathways of care rather than individual NHS organisations. Services would be built around the needs of cancer patients, rather than patients and their carers having to navigate the different approaches of individual NHS organisations. As such, it proposes a fundamental system shift with the creation of Integrated Cancer Systems (ICS) as provider collaborations to improve the delivery of cancer care. London Cancer is an Integrated Cancer System for North Central & North East London and West Essex. It brings together providers from across the health community, academia and the voluntary sector to drive step change improvements in outcomes and experience for the patients and populations we serve.

This new way of working will strengthen the support for promoting clinical trial participation across the whole network and foster closer working between the NLCRN with the North East London Cancer Research Network (NELCRN). London Cancer also has a commitment to involve more patients in research, with an objective that by 2015/16, 33% of local cancer patients will take part in clinical trials.

The NLCRN and London Cancer are seeking to appoint a new Clinical Lead for Research to build on the work undertaken in the past 10 years, currently led by Dr Tim Meyer. This is a part-time position, requiring the commitment of 1PA per week (funded) and it is expected that applicants will be working at a consultant level within the Network and have a robust track record in NIHR clinical trial leadership and recruitment.

The successful applicant will provide the clinical leadership and influence to work alongside the established team to provide credibility and ensuring equitable provision of an excellent clinical trials portfolio for patients with cancer within the region. The ability to develop a cohesive programme of research alongside the NELCRN and promoting the value and ethos of clinical trials within the constituent Trusts, clinical communities and Trust R&D Departments, will be pivotal in the on-going success of the Research Network. This presents an exciting opportunity for a local clinical leader to further enhance the clinical research framework within North London.

For further information about the role – please see the Job Description

All applicants will be acknowledged.

Candidates wishing to apply should email a letter of interest and CV to: applications@uclpartners.com

Closing date: 5pm, Thursday 8th March 2012.

Interviews are scheduled for the afternoon of 12th March 2012

For further information: Please contact Professor Kathy Pritchard-Jones (k.pritchard-jones@ucl.ac.uk), Chief Medical Officer, London Cancer or Dr James Lyddiard (james.lyddiard@cancer.ucl.ac.uk), NLCRN & UCL ECMC Senior Manager.
